PageTools is a collection of additions that make PageMaker work faster, easier, and more efficiently than ever before. PageTools brings new power to PageMaker by providing fast, easy solutions for your everyday desktop publishing needs. Whether you're laying out a brochure, creating a catalog, or designing a poster, PageTools increases your efficiency by reducing desktop navigation time. PageTools not only enhances PageMaker, but improves its usability, thereby increasing your productivity. The ten additions in the collection share a consistent user interface and are designed and tested to work smoothly with PageMaker 5.0. We believe you'll find PageTools a natural extension of PageMaker.
What Is The PageTools Demo?
The Demo is a complete working version of PageTools, with the exception of promotional screens that display when starting and quitting PageMaker. The demo will "expire" after one week. When it expires, the demo will continue to work normally, but the promotional screens will display periodically while you're using PageTools. The only way to cancel the automatic promotional screens is to remove PageTools or update to the release version.
How To Buy The Release Version

Documentation
The enclosed PageMaker 5.0 document, "PageTools Demo Guide", provides an overview of the features of each addition. All of the PageTool additions can be accessed either through the PageBar or the "Aldus Additions" menu, which is located in PageMaker's "Utilities" Menu. To get started, simply install PageTools (see next section) and use the PageTools Demo Guide for reference.
System and Software Requirements
Computer: Any Apple Macintosh computer that can run PageMaker 5.0.
Software: Aldus PageMaker 5.0 and System 7.0 or later.
Memory: Generally, PageMaker requires a minimum 2750 kilobytes of RAM to run successfully, but the more memory assigned to PageMaker the better. PageTools uses memory from PageMaker's allocation. When in use, PageTools uses from as little as 50K to as much as 300K when all of the PageTools are in use with a large document. We recommend that PageMaker's preferred memory size be increased by 300K, if possible. If you are unable to increase PageMaker's memory size, all the PageTools will still work fine, but might not work as fast when used heavily with large documents.
To increase the memory allocated to PageMaker:
1. Quit PageMaker.
2. Select the PageMaker 5.0 icon.
3. Choose "Get info" from the File menu.
The "Aldus PageMaker 5.0 Info" dialog box appears. The memory allocation edit boxes are located at the bottom of the dialog box.
4. Highlight the "Preferred size" edit box and add 300 to the preferred size amount.
Installation
Before installing PageTools, you must have Aldus PageMaker 5.0 installed, and please turn off any antivirus software and extensions, quit all applications, and restart your computer.
To install PageTools:
1. Quit all applications, including PageMaker.
2. Insert the PageTools disk into the disk drive.
3. Double-click the "PageTools Installer" icon to open it.
The PageTools installer introduction screen is displayed.
4. Click the Continue button.
The "Welcome to PageTools" dialog box is displayed. Installation notes are displayed in this window.
5. Click the Continue button.
The "Install PageTools" dialog box appears
6. Click the Install button.
The restart alert dialog is displayed.
7. Click the Yes button.
The disk selection dialog appears. The dialog requests that you select the disk on which you want PageTools installed.
8. Select the same disk where your copy of PageMaker is installed.
9. Click the Install button.
PageTools should be installed in PageMaker's Additions folder. If the installer cannot find the Additions folder, it will ask you to find it. Normally the Additions folder is in the Aldus folder located in the System Folder, though sometimes the Aldus folder can be in the PageMaker folder. Once you have found the Additions folder, simply select any addition file from within it and installation should proceed normally. The installation program will begin installing. Once installation is complete, the successful installation dialog appears and requests that you restart.
10. Click the Restart button.
Troubleshooting
Installation
The PageTools installer installs all the PageTools in the Aldus Additions folder. There is no custom install feature available with this version. All the PageTools use under 1700K of disk space, but if you do prefer to remove specific PageTools, you can remove them by dragging them from the Aldus Additions folder to the Trash. Do not remove the file “PageToolbox.add” since it provides necessary resources for all the PageTools.
The PageTools installer will ask you to select which drive you want PageTools installed on, but it will first search for the additions folder on the drive that contains the active System Folder and install there if it finds the addition folder. If you want PageTools installed elsewhere, you can manually drag the additions.
If you receive an “Extensis error # -34” during installation, it means that your hard drive is full and there isn’t enough room for PageTools to install. To install PageTools, clear space on your hard drive by removing items or using compression software.
PageBar
PageMaker’s toolbox palette contains tools such as the pointer and text tool. PageBar lets you put these tools on the PageBar to save valuable desktop space. When these toolbox commands are used from the PageBar, they can become inaccurate in displaying the currently selected tool when switching between multiple documents or using the story editor. This inconsistency is easily correctable by selecting the tool you want or toggling tools.
PageColors
Sometimes when PageColors finds a match, you can’t see the selected object because it is either behind the PageColors dialog box or not visible on screen. You can move the PageColors dialog box around the screen to uncover the selected item but when the object is off screen, it can’t be scrolled into view. We suggest that you display the publication in the “Fit in window” view size before using PageColors so the whole page is viewable during the search and find process.
PageGuides
PageGuides duplicates guides exactly like the page they came from, so if you duplicate guides from a right hand page to a left hand page the guides may look unbalanced. Guides appear in the same location on the page but not in relation to the page itself.
PageMover
PageMover uses the clipboard to store objects. When using PageMover be aware that anything in the clipboard will be deleted when moving objects.
When deleting objects in the pasteboard, you will see all objects on the page and pasteboard selected, but only objects in the pasteboard will be deleted.
PagePreview
PagePreview saves a preview even if you cancel a save but will not save when closing before saving. To ensure you have an up-to-date preview, simply save at anytime before closing the publication.
PagePrinter
If you encounter “Extensis error #5218 General Printer failure.” you simply need to select a printer from the Chooser or set up a PPD file.
PageZoom
PageZoom does not automatically refresh after a change in zoom level or after resizing the window because it would be time consuming to refresh every time a change was made to the page. Instead you can control the refresh with the PageZoom “Refresh” button.
RadiusWare
When the PageBar is located at the top of the screen and you are using the RadiusWare Enlarged Menu Font feature, there is a gap between the PageBar and the menu bar. Radius technical support advises that users not use the Enlarged Menu Font feature with any version of System 7, and that it will be discontinued in the next release of RadiusWare. To continue using the PageBar and the RadiusWare Enlarged Menu Font feature together, place the PageBar on the bottom or either side of your screen.
